We came together at the Chateau on the Park Hotel, Christchurch, to remember, reflect, and share the bountiful kai of Aotearoa New Zealand, while bringing hope for the future. This special evening was guided by our talented MC, Dan Pengelly.
Matariki represents a time of renewal, reflection, and gathering. It is a season to share stories, songs, and food, to look back on the past year, and to plan for the future. It is also a time to give thanks for blessings and to honour those who have passed. A uniquely New Zealand celebration, Matariki marks the beginning of the Māori New Year. The cluster of Matariki stars appears in the winter sky, each of its nine stars symbolising qualities such as strength, unity, and growth—values that resonate deeply with our purpose.
The evening began with a stirring karakia by Waka on Avon kapa Haka group, welcoming guests with the power and beauty of Māori culture. A heartfelt grace was delivered from Rev Dr David Coles, setting the tone for a night of connection and gratitude. This was followed by a sumptuous dining experience showcasing the richness of Aotearoa’s kai from KeeWai freshwater crayfish and High Country Salmon. Guests enjoyed a presentation by Simon Lewis from the Canterbury Astronomical Society, learning about the significance of Matariki in the night sky. Neurosurgeons Simon John and Ahmad Taha delivered informative talks reminding us about the importance of the cause, before engaging in a lively charity auction to support our cause. The night concluded with dancing to live music from Dangerbaby, filling the room with joy and celebration.
Matariki is more than a date on the calendar—it is a reminder of the importance of community, gratitude, and hope. As we gathered under the theme of renewal, we reflected on the past, celebrated the present, and looked forward to a future filled with strength and unity.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa—thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to making this evening a true celebration of life, culture, and connection.
